　　However mean your life is, meet it and live it;
　　do not shun it and call it hard names.
; N2 [7 Z( `- ?- E- r　　It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest
　　when you are richest. The fault-finder will
　　find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is.
# o- V" f. P# h# R6 h　　You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling,
9 U* L6 M( M) g% I$ ~　　glorious hours, even in a poor house. The setting sun
) V( N, A, Q+ }3 u- \; |9 i　　is reflected from the windows of the almshouse
9 u- z+ z$ W3 S　　as brightly as from the rich man’s abode;
- `; P& H; v  o! N  {0 w　　the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.
　　I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there,
　　and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.
, x7 O( X" N+ S, A. ~! ^" i5 I　　The town’s poor seem to me often to live
+ F' A. s, R* L. p8 ?　　the most independent lives of any. Maybe they are simply
　　great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that
　　they are above being supported by the town;
　　but it often happens that they are not above
　　supporting themselves by dishonest means,
* J# @; s4 S+ O  g4 T　　which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty
# s; e  T) G" ^5 B　　like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much
, B/ r4 i" R& \8 x9 q9 B. t6 N　　to get new things, whether clothes or friends.
　　Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change.
