My Grandpapa lives in a wonderful house2 F& n* F- S, C! l4 r+ z
With a great many windows and doors,
y1 J' k3 p3 O3 l There are stairs that go up, and stairs that go down," [: f5 G; J2 w1 e: J8 ~1 t
And such beautiful, slippery floors./ T9 P/ ~1 z1 T% c/ j# U
But of all of the rooms, even mother's and mine,3 a: P7 V2 F9 `& S8 Y" G$ ]. ]
And the bookroom, and parlour and all,/ J4 j5 z* t) {) d& H8 @! {
I like the green dining-room so much the best
) J, p l6 U/ G6 f4 z4 _2 p% Z x! Z Because of its ceiling and wall.* x9 b8 l' ~, A1 b
Right over your head is a funny round hole. O8 a# z* B" ]$ p# l
With apples and pears falling through;
' J# M( ^0 w5 o l There's a big bunch of grapes all purply and sweet,
2 K) [8 G8 i8 z4 R' m And melons and pineapples too.1 Y2 X+ h7 F4 D* Y" q- L. m
They tumble and tumble, but never come down7 X# z9 w% f/ }* S& v
Though I've stood underneath a long while; b; o! a' G2 i3 b# L9 n3 E H
With my mouth open wide, for I always have hoped" r% m X% l% M& \2 k/ G! F5 K# R
Just a cherry would drop from the pile.
8 T. n% u$ Q. ]: f No matter how early I run there to look9 n9 z% ^5 c" M8 _6 c/ E$ h7 v
It has always begun to fall through;
. U+ g- n" F, ^7 x: P- O: j* x* `2 C And one night when at bedtime I crept in to see,8 h3 p) o8 ]( E2 h
It was falling by candle-light too.
& e% i# @, ^7 ^ I am sure they are magical fruits, and each one/ P2 z" n6 t' H
Makes you hear things, or see things, or go2 |% X" N$ P9 L$ c* T" R8 {( ]
Forever invisible; but it's no use,/ w; c# {# ^* {$ o' h" v" ?
And of course I shall just never know.
0 g2 L1 n- H- `8 I, F7 `/ E For the ladder's too heavy to lift, and the chairs3 O( W% h" V! [0 g# |# j
Are not nearly so tall as I need.9 n# _; K+ g) C( \; j/ v* y: l+ w
I've given up hope, and I feel I shall die
2 I* x- o2 H% n. \8 `( h Without having accomplished the deed.7 i( V' S6 _. w( v! v3 H
It's a little bit sad, when you seem very near* O! @, t7 e! }- ^' s
To adventures and things of that sort,
( n1 |5 U1 T5 ~) C1 w0 a: L- K Which nearly begin, and then don't; and you know
8 }! ]$ W0 d% p# c# e. [ It is only because you are short.8 s% D$ W3 I1 {& Y1 h
